City Council likely to delay decisions on CVS, airport

The City Council tomorrow night is expected to consider adding solar development on the dry lake bed to the Land Management Plan.

However, a proposal to sell a small piece of land at Buchanan Boulevard and Nevada Highway to Nevada CVS Pharmacy so the company can build a store there will likely be delayed, City Manager Vicki Mayes said. The council also postponed until Feb. 10 a report on runway safety at the Boulder City Airport.

Both the CVS and airport items were delayed because Councilman Mike Pacini and Councilwoman Linda Strickland expected to be absent from the meeting, city staff members said.

The Planning Commission has recommended that 6,561 acres in the Eldorado Valley be approved for solar use. Adding it to the Land Management Plan is the first step in allowing solar development on the property. The Land Management Plan is designed to give the public a chance to comment on the use of city-owned land while proposals are still early in the planning stages.

Part of the proposed solar area is on the dry lake bed, which is currently set aside for recreation and government open land. The City Council earlier this month voted to allow solar power companies to test that area for possibly building plants there.

The City Council Dec. 9 had planned to approve selling a 5,400 square-foot area to CVS Pharmacy for $85,000, but postponed so it could notify the owner of a neighboring trailer park and get any further comments.

CVS has said it needs that land so it can finish buying the Starview Motel and Fortune China restaurant as a site for a new pharmacy.

The trailer park owners had no objection, according to a memo to the City Council.

Former City Councilman Bill Smith also told the council Dec. 9 he would pay $131,497 for the land, claiming the city wasn’t getting a fair price from CVS.

City staff said the council won’t have to consider Smith’s competing bid because the land is being sold as a lot-line adjustment, only to neighboring owners.

In a Redevelopment Agency meeting before the council meeting, the board will consider granting El Rancho Boulder Motel $16,500 to reinstall its historic motel sign, which was blown over by winds on Christmas Day.

The RDA meeting begins at 6:30 p.m., in City Hall, 401 California Ave., and the City Council meeting follows at 7 p.m.
