Harrah’s ranked among top workplaces for gays

Harrah's this week was the only Nevada-based company listed among the top workplaces for gays, lesbians, bisexual and transgender people by the Human Rights Campaign.

The large advocacy group uses its own "Corporate Equality Index" to evaluate 583 large companies nationwide.

Harrah's was one of 260 to receive perfect scores by offering full benefits to same-sex domestic partners, including both sexual orientation and gender identity in its employee handbook non-discrimination policies as well as its diversity workshops, and by offering mental health counseling to transgender workers.

Both MGM Mirage and Sierra Health Services also scored highly on the Human Rights Campaign survey.

MGM Mirage was not considered a "best place" to work because it does not outline a specific policy on gender identity discrimination, said Human Rights Campaign spokesman Trevor Thomas. That policy is aimed at workers who are expressing a gender other than the one they are born with or are undergoing gender reassignment therapies.

Thompson said MGM Mirage has indicated it is in the process of updating its discrimination policies so that it can achieve the award in future years.
