Boulder City:

New councilman tagged with lots of extra duties

Within his first hour as a city councilman, Cam Walker had a full schedule.

Of 15 local and regional boards and commissions on which the Boulder City Council has a seat, Walker was elected by his fellow council members to five of them.

“You’re going to be busy,” Mayor Roger Tobler said after Walker’s election to the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition and Clark County Debt Management Board, his fifth appointment. One person is appointed to both boards.

“I am looking forward to it,” Walker said.

But it was clear Walker had not set out to take all of the appointments.

After Councilman Duncan McCoy was elected mayor pro tem, to conduct the council meetings in Tobler’s absence, Councilman Travis Chandler nominated Walker to replace him on the Boulder City Community Education Advisory Board.

In a 4-1 vote, Walker was a one-member minority.

“It’s because you’re sitting on the end,” Tobler told Walker.

“Let’s not start a pattern,” Walker shot back with a smile.

Councilwoman Linda Strickland then nominated Walker for the Clark County School District Oversight Board. Walker returned the favor, nominating Strickland, who currently sits on the board.

Walker was selected on a 3-2 vote after raising both of his hands for Strickland. Only one hand counted, however.

“He has the kids,” Strickland quipped.

Walker, the father of five school-age children, also was appointed on a 3-2 vote to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, a choice job because it deals with tourism dollars, and the Nevada Development Authority, which strives to bring business to the state.

Other appointments included:

• Tobler to the executive board of the Civilian Military Council, which is designed to improve relations between Nellis Air Force Base and the community, and the Regional Transportation Commission and Regional Flood Control District.

• McCoy to the Southern Nevada Water Authority and Nevada League of Cities and the league’s legislative committee. Walker was elected as his alternate.

• Strickland to the Nevada Public Agency Insurance Pool Board of Directors and the Public Compensation Trust.

• Chandler to the Southern Nevada Criminal Justice Advisory Board and Workforce Investment Board.

• Strickland to the Southern Nevada Health District Board and the Nevada Public Agency Insurance Pool Board of Directors and Public Compensation Trust.

• Chandler to the Southern Nevada Criminal Justice Advisory Board and Workforce Investment Board, and as alternate to the Southern Nevada Health District Board.

CORRECTION: This story was updated to add that Linda Strickland was appointed to the Southern Nevada Health District Board and Travis Chandler as her alternate. | (June 26, 2009)
