Gospel voices raised the roof in the Black Mountain Recreation Center at the fifth annual Henderson Gospel Fest.

Tanya Myers, recreation services supervisor for the Black Mountain Recreation Center, said she was still pumped after the success of the Feb. 27 and 28 event.

The black history event attracted 7,500 visitors Friday night for Urban poet and author Kweisi Gharreau and another 1,100 Saturday night for the Ken Young and Friends gospel concert, which began with 10-year-old Carrington Peterson singing "Lift Every Voice and Sing."

Attendance was up from last year's event, which attracted 1,500 people. This was the first year the event expanded to two days.

"We plan on doing a two-night event next year, but we'll be putting a spin on it," Myers said. "We don't know what yet. Maybe we'll add more dancing."

Surprise guests at the Feb. 28 concert included Bubba Knight, formerly of Gladys Knight and the Pips.

The event was co-sponsored by the Henderson Parks and Recreation and Cultural Arts and Tourism Departments and Power 88 KCEP.
