Driver killed in collision with parked vehicle identified

A 31-year-old man died about 1:30 a.m. Sunday after he lost control of his 2000 Honda Civic and crashed into a parked 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck parked on East Carey Road, North Las Vegas Police said today.

The Clark County Coroner's Office identified the man as Santos Rivas-Rivera of North Las Vegas. A cause and manner of death has not been determined, a coroner's spokeswoman said.

North Las Vegas traffic investigators said a preliminary examination of the scene and the evidence indicated that the black Honda Civic was going west on East Carey from Pecos Road at a high rate of speed.

The Honda's driver lost control of the car and it spun and struck the pickup truck, which was legally parked on the north side of Carey, police said. No one else was involved in the collision.

The Honda's driver was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical crews, police said.

It has not been determined if alcohol or drugs were involved in this collision, police said. This is the fifth fatal crash in North Las Vegas this year.
