Fatal shooting

A man is dead and a woman was hospitalized after both were shot in the head Monday at an eastern Las Vegas Valley apartment complex, Metro Police said.

A woman called police about 12:30 p.m. while screaming, "Somebody's been shot, somebody's been shot," Officer Ramon Denby said.

When officers arrived at the Pacific Harbor Apartments, 5150 E. Sahara Ave. near Nellis Boulevard, they found a man on the floor of an apartment, Denby said. He was dead of a gunshot wound to the head, police said.

A second caller said another person had also been shot, Denby said. A woman, who was shot in the face, was taken to University Medical Center's trauma unit by her father in unknown condition, Denby said.

Lt. Lew Roberts, chief of Metro's Homicide Section, said homicide detectives are looking into whether the double shooting involved drugs.

Roberts said a firearm wasn't found at the scene. He said the motive of the shootings is unknown.

He said witnesses reported seeing three men leaving the scene after gunshots were fired. Residents were waiting across the street Monday afternoon for permission to enter the apartment complex.

Resident Lorraine Llamas had been waiting three hours to enter her home, adding that the neighborhood is usually safe.

Earl William said he was working across the street when he saw several police cruisers arrive at the complex.

"I’ve been in worse neighborhoods," Williams said, "but this is the first time I’ve ever seen anything like this."
