LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Liberals need to listen past the first sentence of debate

It seems amazing to me that a dialogue between someone on the “left” and someone on the “right” never seems to begin where it should ... with what we both have in common. The majority of both want what is best for the citizens of this country.

How do I know this? Just truly listen to what is being said in totality, not just the original stance.

For example, Democrats want health care, adequate wages, education, proper food and shelter for every citizen. Well, guess what? So do the Republicans.

Now if you are on the “left,” you do not believe this about Republicans. Why? Because all a Democrat hears is that “we are against this health care bill” or “we are against raising the minimum wage.” So he/she assumes that the person “on the right” is selfish and just wants as much of his/her own money as they can keep and doesn’t want to help others.

This assumption is dead wrong. It is the method of acquiring these life benefits that is the argument. Wake up. We both would want everyone who is able to be financially, socially and morally successful.

So the argument should be: Should this benefit, be it education, health care, shelter or whatever, which every citizen should have, be provided by the government or the individual? For those who truly want to explore these questions, just read “Atlas Shrugged.”

I guess I exposed my viewpoint, but hopefully a few of you on the “left” will read that excellent book, and even if one of you agrees, it will have made this letter worth it. After all, we both want the same thing.
