LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Ban the use of cell phones while driving

Cell phone use in automobiles is a problem that is increasing rapidly and is something that should be made illegal in Nevada. A ban on cell phone use, whether it is texting or talking, would significantly reduce the number of car accidents that result from this distraction.

Studies have shown that texting, or cell phone use, carries with it a higher risk of crashing compared with other distractions.

When someone is engaged in a deep, emotional conversation, or even just a simple text, most of that person’s attention is focused on the phone rather than traffic, innocent pedestrians or others doing the same thing.

Some might argue that there are plenty of other distractions while driving and that outlawing only one is foolish. Others might state that it would be too hard to enforce this law and it wouldn’t stop people from using cell phones.

But if people knew there was a chance that, while they were using their phones and driving simultaneously, they could get pulled over or receive a large fine, it would reduce the number of drivers who would commit the action.
