LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Value of school lunches lost on Palin

The other day I sat reflecting on all I have to be thankful for as 2010 draws to a close. Then a news item appeared on TV in which Sarah Palin was addressing some group someplace and was ridiculing Michelle and Barack Obama’s mission to improve the nutritional value of school lunches.

At first I was amused. I mean why would anyone oppose improving the quality of food served to children at school? For far too many kids, what they get at school may be their only decent meal of the day. Palin was saying that only parents should be able to decide what their kids eat, not the government.

But don’t parents elect members of school boards, Congress and, yes, presidents to decide what their kids eat in publicly funded places like schools? My point, which turned my feeling of amusement into sadness, is that even something that seems so simple and right is seized upon by people such as Palin to score political points. And amazingly there are people whose mind-sets cause them to nod in agreement.

I know some things will never change but as we go forward into 2011, I hope we will find a way to care about each other. I won’t give up hope, I decided. But then I read Tuesday that former Republican Senate nominee Sharron Angle is not going away but is helping form a new group, the Patriot Caucus. It is getting harder to stay optimistic.
