West CTA freshman wins holiday art contest

West Career and Technical Academy

A West Career and Technical Academy freshman was awarded the first-place prize in a holiday art contest, beating out more than 300 other entries.

Dongkwan Kim, a ninth grade student at West CTA, won the Public Education Foundation’s annual contest. This year’s theme was “Beauty of the Season.”

Kim’s artwork will be showcased on the Foundation’s 2010 holiday card, which will be mailed to nearly 10,000 community members. Kim won a gift card to Tropical Smoothie Café, two movie tickets to Brendan Theater, a certificate and 50 holiday cards featuring his artwork.

Leilani Wong won the second-place prize and Nathan Nguyen won the third place prize. Both sophomores at West CTA won the same prize as Kim, except for the holiday cards.

West CTA art teacher Christine Pavesich taught the three winners. She won a $50 gift card to the Cheesecake Factory and credits to shop at the Foundation’s Teacher EXCHANGE, a reuse and recycling center for southern Nevada public school teachers.

Almost 400 art entries were submitted for the contest from 15 Clark County School District elementary, middle and high schools.

The Public Education Foundation is a nonprofit educational organization in Southern Nevada. Since 1991, the foundation has raised more than $67 million to improve teaching and learning in public schools.
