House fire

A house fire in the western Las Vegas Valley this morning is being ruled an arson, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials said.

Firefighters responded at 9:56 a.m. to the fire at 7708 Bentonite Drive, which is northwest of the intersection of Buffalo Drive and Washington Avenue. The home was located in the Calico Vista subdivision.

Fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames coming from the home. The back patio door was open when firefighters arrived.

The house was vacant and no injuries were reported.

Neighbors called 911 when they saw smoke coming from the vents of the house. They told investigators the home had been empty for about a year.

Before the home became vacant, it was a rental property. There had been a “for sale” sign in the front yard, but it was taken down a few months ago, neighbors told fire officials.

The fire only took a few minutes to extinguish, but it caused about $75,000 in damage to the nearly-3,000-square-foot home, investigators said.
