Officials say the North Las Vegas Airport is safer now that electrical wires and towers have been removed from an area near the airport.

The Clark County Department of Aviation and NV Energy recently completed the $9 million project to remove nearly 2,900 linear feet of wires and 100-foot-tall towers along the south side of Carey Avenue between Rancho Drive and Simmons Street.

Airport officials said the power lines were a hazard to small aircraft taking off and landing on two of the airport’s busiest runways. The lines were replaced by underground service.

The project was funded by more than $6 million in Airport Improvement Program funding from the Federal Aviation Administration, nearly $2.7 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and $320,000 from the aviation department.

“This project has been on our wish list for nearly 10 years, but its launch was postponed until funding became available,” said Director of Aviation Randall H. Walker. “We’re grateful that our congressional delegation secured the money needed to complete this long-awaited improvement.”

Clark County Commissioner Lawrence Weekly said the project was responding to local residents’ concerns about safety at the airport.

“Last fall, a state-appointed task force told the Legislature that removing some of the taller structures near the airport was one of its 13 recommendations for improving safety near this airport,” Weekly said. “This project demonstrates the county’s willingness to work with other government agencies, as well as the private sector, to work toward solutions to the challenges we jointly face.”
