Reliance on paper files a flaw in VA system

Thank you for editorializing in Thursday’s Las Vegas Sun how the veterans in this country are so poorly treated by the federal government’s Veterans Affairs. As Clay Hunt stated in the editorial, “Fixing the VA,” he can track his pizza delivery on his BlackBerry better than his health claim at the VA.

The fact the VA mostly relies on paper files instead of a computerized claims system is rather disturbing. The average backlog of a claim is five months.

Soldiers complain they have to fight to prove their disability claims and some have to settle for compensation far below what they are legally owed. This is very troubling and the kind of warning we should all heed because the federal government is rolling out a major overhaul of the private-sector health care system.

Is this what we will get under the government-controlled health care exchange? If we are going to have everyone covered under a national health care system, we better let private industry run it. Otherwise it will be one big VA fiasco. Just ask a disabled veteran.
