Public safety:

Cigarette might have started fire at apartment complex

Fire

A cigarette tossed outside an apartment complex might have caused a fire Saturday night that forced two people from their home and caused an estimated $10,000 damage, Las Vegas Fire and Rescue officials said.

The fire, reported at 6:49 p.m. in the 6700 block of Del Rey Avenue, damaged the exterior wall, attic and roof of the building, officials said.

Extra fire units were called in because of intense smoke in the attic when the first firefighters arrived. The blaze was brought under control in a few minutes, officials said.

No one was injured in the blaze, which broke out in a two-story building in the area of Rainbow and Oakey boulevards.

The fire appears to have started outside the building and might have been caused by “improperly discarded smoking material,” officials said. It appears the fire ran up the outside wall and utility chase into the attic, officials said.
