Count the Elephant

A numerical breakdown of Cage the Elephant’s Tuesday-night show at Wasted Space

Cage the Elephant

4: The number of members in Cage the Elephant who could use a haircut.

22-20s. The UK-based rockers who opened the show.

1. Number of dollars Cage the Elephant lead singer Matt Shultz says he lost in Vegas. "The bad news is I only spent $1."

3. Songs the crowd as a whole could be heard singing along with. "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked," "Back Against the Wall" and "In One Ear" — the band's singles, of course.

40 percent. The guesstimated amount of time the guy next to me spent staring at the ground (and subsequently my pretty purple shoes) instead of the stage because the epileptic seizure-inducing lights at Wasted Space were annoying him.

6 fluid ounces, or half a can of beer, spilled during the opening song (Dr. Dr. Dr.) by one fan so excited he forgot the cardinal rule of fist pumping: Only do so with your non-beer hand.

0. The number of cans of beer Wasted Space sells. Hmm...

4. Number of instances I saw a glimpse of Shultz's eyes. The spastic frontman exploded energy and spent most of the show jumping around feverishly, but he almost never opened his eyes. He could have just been that into the music. I blame the seizure lights.

"2024." The song playing when Shultz first crowd-surfed.

10. On a scale from 1 to 10, how cool it was the second time Shultz crowd-surfed. After jumping into a small mesh of riled-up fans, he stood up, supported only by outstretched hands of the dedicated bunch.

14-word review, from a Wisconsin tourist who knew nothing about the band before attending the show with a friend: "Not bad. I was a little tired at the start, so that didn't help."
