A film fest with class

Campus MovieFest brings student films to the Wynn this weekend

Red Carpet

Campus MovieFest

Will the filmmakers featured at Campus MovieFest be the next big red carpet stars?

Calendar

  • What: Campus MovieFest
  • When: June 10-13
  • Where: Wynn Las Vegas
  • Tickets: Purchase here.

College students all over the country are making films. The laptops and camcorders are on loan, the creativity comes standard and the films are five minutes or less of pure, amateur effort.

Since its birth at Emory University, Campus MovieFest has grown into the world's largest student film fest, with 75,000 budding filmmakers participating this season in 50 events across the country. The entire 2009-2010 tour culminates this weekend with the International Grand Finale honoring the best of CMF and held June 10-13 at Wynn Las Vegas.

So what exactly can you expect from a film festival/workshop/college party held somewhat surprisingly at one of the Strip's shmanciest resorts? Totally open to the public (though likely to be populated overwhelmingly by participants), the Grand Finale has all the makings of a big-league fest with a ticket price in the minors. Friday and Saturday are packed with daytime screenings of 250 of the tour's best films, as well as workshops with industry names like screenwriter Mark Boal of The Hurt Locker. And of course, there's a Saturday night awards ceremony to honor the best of the bunch with screenings, prizes and the coveted Golden Tripod Award (Ancient. Priceless. Better than cheese, according to the CMF website). If you go, keep an eye out for the next group of Hollywood star directors. They'll be there, just a few years shy of their big breaks.
