LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Remembering a wonderful dad this Father’s Day

My father was very intelligent. He disciplined with his dark blue eyes. He never said a word when he was giving one “that look.”

I was the youngest of four brothers and four sisters. I don’t ever remember loud talking or anyone screaming at another person. My father would not tolerate unacceptable behavior.

My father reminded his children of their last name. “Do not tarnish the family name,” he always reminded us.

Music was an important part of our household. We were encouraged to sing and play an instrument. In my teens, I sang in a trio and played in the high school band.

The night I graduated from high school, I was awarded an academic scholarship. After four years I became a science teacher.

My father was very proud of me as I became settled in a career. He had passed away by the time I became a nominee for Wichita (Kansas) Woman of the Year in 1969.

My dear father was with me at all times.

Through the years, I’ve missed my mother, who passed away three weeks before I entered fourth grade. She chose a wonderful man to be the father of her children.

I have fond memories of my father. He taught me to have self-confidence and never be afraid of any challenge I might face in life. He has always been my beacon of hope.

Fathers are very important in a child’s life. I speak from experience.

God bless all fathers on this Father’s Day.
