Smoke from Arizona fires could lower LV air quality

Smoke from fires in Arizona could affect the air quality in Southern Nevada, Clark County officials said today.

More than 5,000 acres was burning near Flagstaff, which could contribute to lower air quality in the valley, said Phillip Wiker, with the county's Department of Air Quality and Environmental Management.

“I don’t anticipate a large impact,” Wiker said, adding that current air patterns into the valley show winds coming from California. “With these fires, there’s a lot depending on it.”

The impact of the fire will depend on which way the winds are blowing and where the fire goes if it were to expand, he said.

Smoke is just one of many components that influence air quality, Wiker said.

The cause of the so-called Eagle Rock Fire remains under investigation, but it was likely lightening that initiated it, officials have said.
