Fatal crash

Two people killed Tuesday night when a car slammed head-on into a sport utility vehicle were identified Wednesday. Two children in the backseat of the car survived, the Nevada Highway Patrol reported.

The crash happened about 8:30 p.m. on a stretch of Lake Mead Boulevard about four miles east of Los Feliz Street, police said. The winding road in the northeast valley heads toward Lake Mead.

The Clark County Coroner's Office identified the driver Wednesday as 25-year-old Matalio Galindo and the passenger as 19-year-old Annica Franco, both of North Las Vegas. The coroner said both died of multiple injuries as a result of the crash.

The car was headed west when it crossed the double-yellow line on the highway and collided head-on with a Chevrolet Blazer, Trooper Joseph Fackrell said.

Galindo and Franco were in the front seat when the crash occurred, Fackrell said. The woman’s 4-month-old daughter, who was in a car seat, was taken to University Medical Center, but it appears she will be all right, troopers said.

The driver’s son, about 5 or 6 years old, was also taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK, Fackrell said.

The driver of the Blazer was transported to UMC and was reported in stable condition, Fackrell said.

Troopers are investigating why the car crossed the center line. “It appears he was trying to pass, but it’s unknown at this time,” Fackrell said.

The speed limit on that section of road is 40 mph, he said. The highway was closed in both directions several hours after the wreck as police investigated.
