LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

McChrystal must do the honorable thing: Retire

Fire or forgive: That is the decision President Barack Obama now has to make after he dresses down Gen. Stanley McChrystal for the disparaging comments by the general and his top aides in an article in Rolling Stone magazine. The general and his aides impugned and disparaged the president and the president’s point persons on the Afghan war.

The president will neither fire nor forgive. I believe Gen. McChrystal will instead announce his voluntary retirement from the Army as a general who, despite an illustrious and glowing military career, made a major media mistake.

I’m sorry to see him go, but go he must. I think the president, to his credit, will give the general the option to do the only thing worthy of a man in uniform who commits the mistake he did: retire willingly. He will do the right thing and retire.
