LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

We need Reid’s voice in Washington

I am putting pen to paper to appeal to the people of Nevada to avoid the mistake I made years ago. In 1980 I hitched onto the popular bandwagon at the time, the Moral Majority, and helped to remove Howard Cannon, a four-term U.S. senator. His 24 years in the Senate provided Nevada with a strong presence and a voice to be reckoned with, advocating for the best interests of the people of our state.

Today’s bandwagon is the Tea Party. With no disrespect intended toward Chic Hecht in the 1982 election or Sharron Angle today, renouncing the power of a four-term senator in favor of a specific issue novelty, regardless of the movement’s sincerity, enthusiasm or thematic endorsements, is a big mistake.

At this critical time, Nevada needs the credible, respected, temperate and powerful authority of Harry Reid campaigning for us. Reid is exceptionally placed to give our state exposure and bring opportunity home to us.

George Santayana said, “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” People of Nevada, learn from my past mistake and retain Harry Reid.
