Metro identifies officer involved in Sunday shooting

Officer-involved shooting

Metro Police today identified an officer who fired his weapon late Sunday after a fight with an armed man in the western valley.

Police said Officer Cody Thompson, 26, fired a shot at about 11 p.m. Sunday at 2200 Torrey Pines Drive, which is near the road's intersection with Smoke Ranch Road. Thompson's shot missed the man and no one was injured in the shooting or the fight.

Police received a call that a vehicle was in the area that had been reported stolen. A suspect armed with a gun ran when officers arrived, police said.

Police chased the man before words were exchanged between the suspect and officer. Authorities say the officer fired at the suspect, but missed.

A Taser was used on the man and he was detained after a brief struggle, Morgan said.

Thompson has been with Metro Police since January 2007 and is assigned to the Northwest Area Command Patrol Division. He was placed on paid administrative leave during an investigation, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shooting cases.
