A month and a half ago, in a letter to the editor, I mentioned that one of America’s problems is that it is losing common sense.
Well, if a school district in Coventry, R.I., isn’t the perfect example of a lack of common sense then I don’t know what is. According to the Associated Press, a second-grader’s homemade hat — made as part of a school assignment in which the student chose a patriotic theme — was banned because it displayed toy soldiers with tiny guns.
The superintendent of the school district later reversed the ban, according to AP, but I cannot in my wildest imagination even begin to understand how anyone could complain about plastic army men under any circumstances.
