Metro Police said a man accused of transporting a suspicious device Tuesday -- prompting a Las Vegas intersection to be closed for hours -- will be charged with felony possession of an explosive device in a public area.

Todd Smith, 40, is being held at the North Las Vegas Detention Center on a warrant charging him with felony possession of methamphetamine and possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, North Las Vegas Police spokesman Sgt. Tim Bedwell said.

He eventually will be transferred to the Clark County Detention Center in connection with the additional charge.

Metro spokeswoman Barbara Morgan said the suspicious device was an explosive but didn't provide other details.

The incident closed the intersection of Sahara Avenue and Decatur Boulevard and surrounding streets for nearly three hours Tuesday and prompted the evacuation of about 20 businesses.

Officers found the device when they were searching the truck Smith was driving after a traffic stop revealed he had an outstanding warrant. The Las Vegas Fire and Rescue bomb squad responded to the scene and used two robots to ensure the device wasn't a threat.
