CARSON CITY – The state Department of Cultural Affairs is opening the competition for artists to paint the portrait of Gov. Jim Gibbons, which will be added to the Nevada capitol alongside other governors.

The Legislative Interim Finance Committee last week allocated $20,000 for the portrait, which must be done in oil colors and framed similar to the other portraits on the first floor of the capitol.

The competition is open to all artists but they must have completed a minimum of two paintings that are comparable to a governor’s portrait.

Artists must submit their proposals to the Nevada Arts Council by July 22. Three finalists will be selected and Gibbons will choose the winner.

The winner will be named by Aug. 20 and he or she must complete the portrait by Dec. 17.

The maximum commission is $17,500 for the painting, frame and hanging apparatus and up to $2,500 is set aside for travel by the artist to complete the work.
