2 arrested in fatal January shooting at tire store

Llantera del Norte

Two men have been arrested in connection with a January murder and attempted robbery at a tire store in the northeast valley.

Luis Armando Ramirez, 36, is charged with murder with use of a deadly weapon, kidnapping, attempted robbery with a deadly weapon, attempted robbery, burglary and conspiracy in the Jan. 6, 2010, incident at Llantera del Norte, 4380 N. Lamb Blvd.

A 41-year-old employee identified by police as Pedro Quijay-Cacain was shot to death at the store. A second employee was beaten, police said.

Ramirez is set to appear for arraignment Thursday morning. He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on Monday.

Ulises J. Gomez, 26, was arrested earlier this month in connection with the same incident and is facing similar charges, jail records show.

Authorities are still looking for third man identified as “Pelon” who investigators say was involved in the crimes.

According to a Metro Police arrest report released Wednesday by the Clark County District Attorney’s office, Gomez was identified as a suspect about 10 days after the shooting when police received two anonymous tips. A records check indicated he had several felony arrest warrants, the report stated.

Gomez was arrested March 8 in California by the FBI’s fugitive task force. Metro detectives interviewed him the next day in the Los Angeles County jail. Gomez said he and two other men had been at a gas station next to the tire shop at about 3 a.m. when they decided to come back later and rob the store. Gomez told police the plan was for him to wait inside his black Chevrolet Suburban in the gas station parking lot while the two men went inside the tire shop and tied the workers with tape. The men would then signal to Gomez, who would pull the vehicle up to the store so they could load it up with rims, the report said.

They would then sell the rims for money to gamble, Gomez told police.

Investigators were able to use the information Gomez provided to determine the identity of Ramirez. Gomez was booked into the county jail on March 17.

A records check indicated Ramirez had been arrested for obstructing a police officer and was awaiting deportation to Mexico at the North Las Vegas jail, the report said. Detectives interviewed him at the jail last week and he admitted involvement in the incident, police said.

Ramirez and Gomez recounted a similar series of events in their interviews with police, but each fingered different members of the three-person party as being armed and entering the store, according to the report. Neither admitted to being the gunman.

Both men are being held without bail in the Clark County Detention Center. Gomez is set to appear April 21 for a preliminary hearing. He is also being held on unrelated possession of stolen property and possession of methamphetamine cases, jail records show.
