Metro identifies officer involved in fatal shooting

Shooting location

Metro Police identified an officer Tuesday who shot and killed a man armed with a knife on Saturday who aggressively approached police and refused to drop the weapon.

The officer was 31-year-old Joseph Parra, who has been with Metro since May 2007. He is assigned to the patrol division, Bolden Area Command.

Police say they were called about 11:25 p.m. Saturday to investigate a reported attack with a knife in the 5800 block of Bromley Avenue, which is near U.S. 95 and Jones Boulevard. Officers arrived and saw 45-year-old Brian Shelton of Las Vegas sitting on a block wall and allegedly armed with a knife.

The police department says Shelton got off the wall and aggressively approached the officers, ignoring their commands for him to stop and drop the knife.

When he continued approaching, police say Parra fired three rounds, striking Shelton and incapacitating him. Shelton was transported to a hospital and later died.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
