A holiday snapshot of Macy’s

-- Five stores in Las Vegas.

-- The company expects same-store sales nationwide to be up by 3 to 4 percent in its fourth quarter (the months of November, December and January).

-- In 2009, sales for the months of November and December represented 28 percent of the annual total. It doesn’t report Black Friday sales, but last year November sales were 9 percent of the total.

-- Its holiday marketing includes a combination of brand advertising and promotional advertising. Brand advertising includes Macy’s commercials with the animated “Virginia” and the “Backstage” spot that features many celebrities. Promotional advertising includes ads and commercials for sale events throughout the holiday season, as well as sale-oriented e-mails from macys.com.

-- Green Valley High School Marching Band is in this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade that’s seen by 50 million viewers.

-- It has a new initiative called Gift Shops where stores feature limited-edition gifts, including tech gadgets, apparel and accessories for people and pets and home goods. The grab-and-go center is on the main floor of stores.

-- Online transactions are the fastest-growing part of its business and represent more than $1 billion in annual sales at macys.com and bloomingdales.com.

-- Through the My Macy’s initiative, it’s able to tailor the merchandise assortment to different markets, and even within one market. For example, the Macy’s at Fashion Show mall sees considerable visitor traffic, whereas the Henderson store sees local consumers. This My Macy’s approach allows it to tweak sizes, colors and quantities.

-- Despite the national economy, Macy’s reports its Las Vegas stores are doing well. It attributes this to having the right merchandise at the right price, providing real value to our customers.
