Sharron Angle: Muslim law taking hold in parts of U.S.

Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle speaks during a Nevada Tea Party Patriots event near Durango Drive and the 215 Beltway on Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010.

U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle told a crowd of supporters that the country needs to address a "militant terrorist situation" that has allowed Islamic religious law to take hold in some American cities.

Her comments came at a rally of tea party supporters in the Nevada resort town of Mesquite last week after the candidate was asked about Muslims angling to take over the country, and marked the latest of several controversial remarks by the Nevada Republican.

In a recording of the rally provided to The Associated Press by the Mesquite Local News, a man is heard asking Angle : "I keep hearing about Muslims wanting to take over the United States ... on a TV program just last night, I saw that they are taking over a city in Michigan and the residents of the city, they want them out. They want them out. So, I want to hear your thoughts about that."

Angle responds that "we're talking about a militant terrorist situation, which I believe it isn't a widespread thing, but it is enough that we need to address, and we have been addressing it."

"My thoughts are these, first of all, Dearborn, Michigan, and Frankford, Texas are on American soil, and under constitutional law. Not Sharia law. And I don't know how that happened in the United States," she said. "It seems to me there is something fundamentally wrong with allowing a foreign system of law to even take hold in any municipality or government situation in our United States."

Dearborn, Mich., has a thriving Muslim community. It was not immediately clear why Angle singled out Frankford, Texas, a former town that was annexed into Dallas around 1975.

Responding to the same question, she also drew comparisons between the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the Nazi Holocaust. She said the property owners behind the proposed Islamic community center near ground zero should move it in deference to the people who died there.

"There was, in Auschwitz, I think it was Auschwitz, it was at least a prisoner of war camp, where the Catholic Church owned some property and they were going to build a church there. They had every right to do it but they stepped aside and said, no, we are going to allow the Jewish people to make a monument because they lost lives," she said. "They had a responsibility to be sensitive to what had happened there and it is exactly the same thing as 9/11. Ground zero, we have a responsibility to be sensitive to the loss of a nation, to the loss of families, to the loss of life that happened there."

Angle seemed to be referring to a Roman Catholic convent at the Auschwitz death camp that Pope John Paul II ordered moved in 1993 in response to Jewish protests.

Others, including the Anti-Defamation League, the nation's leading Jewish civil rights group, have evoked the relocated convent while voicing opposition to the mosque. But the ADL also has stressed that 9/11 and the Holocaust are separate, incomparable events.

Angle's campaign did not answer questions about her statements.

"I'm pretty sure that she did make it clear that there had been incidents in the news, but there is nothing widespread, and that we have freedom of religion in this country," said spokesman Jarrod Agen in an e-mail.

Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Washington-based advocacy group, called Angle's statements "bizarre."

"This seems to be an example of incoherent bigotry. It is pretty clear that she has something against Islam and Muslims but she is so incoherent you don't know what she stands for," Hooper said. "The proper response would have been, 'American Muslims are citizens like anyone else. They are free to practice their faith,' not seeming to agree that Muslims are somehow seeking to take over."

Dearborn Mayor Jack O'Reilly called Angle's comments "shameful." He said tea party groups inaccurately spread the word that his Detroit suburb was ruled by Islamic law after members of an anti-Islam group were arrested at an Arab cultural festival in June because a Christian volunteer complained of harassment.

"She took it as face value and maligned the city of Dearborn and I consider that totally irresponsible," he said. "If she wants to come here, I will take her on a tour. I will show her we follow the Constitution just as well as anyone else."

Angle, a Southern Baptist, has called herself a faith-based politician. Among her positions, she opposes abortion in all circumstances, including rape and incest and doesn't believe the Constitution requires the separation of church and state.

Angle is in a dead-heat race against Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who has also said the community center, which would include a mosque, should be built elsewhere. A recent poll showed Reid and Angle tied in the high-profile campaign.

Reid's campaign said Angle's comments advances its ongoing campaign to portray her as outside mainstream America.

"The fact that Sharron Angle believes American cities have been taken over by militant terrorist organizations that are ruling our citizens under Sharia law shows a terrifying lack of connection with reality and a willingness to subscribe to conspiracy theories that demonstrates she's far too extreme and dangerous to represent Nevada in the U.S. Senate," spokesman Kelly Steele said.

  1. It is sad to hear people feel this way in this day and time.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

(However, this world will continue to spin around in spite of what man does or does not do).

  2. Angle said the country faces a "militant terrorist situation"

You need to turn your INFORMATION ON THE TERRORISTS in to Homeland Security.
You may be aiding the terrorists if you do not turn your information in to Homeland Security.

  3. What about the church of Sharron, God talks to me,no abortion no matter what,no medical insurance,no social security,no education and etc. Sounds like Islamic law to me. What do you think we are trying to un-do in the middle east. Democracy is something you lack and all of the Juice you think you have will not help you. You would be great leader on foreign policy along with the other half wit Palin tweedle dee and twiddle dumb.

  4. But what does Chunky think?

  5. you poor misguided, hateful liberals... just go read, actually READ the Constitution. Angle supports it, that is why all the liberal hate here. She will win, we the people will win, the liberals will lose.
ps. maybe read the Bible too, it will be eye-opening for most of you.

  6. Islam is the religion of peace! They come to America in peace! Now surrender immediately or they will cut off your head!

Thousands of years of history have PROVEN that all cultures living within the borders of Islam are annihilated. People either leave, convert or Die. Languages disappear to be replaced by Arabic. There are no exceptions over time to this fact. Every Muslims lifelong goal is to convert or kill all "non-believers" on earth!

We are allowing our country to be concurred by Islam, they are using our belief in freedom of religion to do this. Every American MUST understand that Islam is far more then just a religion, it is a political and legal system with it's own laws, the basis of Islam starts by dividing the whole world into 2 groups, Muslims (believers) and everyone else (non-believers) According to the laws of Islam, the golden rules such as "Thou Shall Not Kill. " only apply to fellow Muslims "Thou shall not kill a Muslim" it's perfectly OK to kill a non-believer.

Islam is a political and legal system that CAN NOT BE ALLOWED to operate within American under the protection on our freedoms of religion. Islam is not compatible with freedom! Islam is an invading force that MUST be stopped NOW!

  7. Muslim need to integrate, they don't. Mexicans need to integrate, they don't. Chinese need to integrate, they don't. Catch my drift? We allow everybody and their mothers to come to America and practice freedom of speech and religion, but when an american complains about foreigners culture that american is racist? Heck no, that american want those foreigners to become americans and interact with americans, those communities are the most racist, more racist than rednecks.
Angle is right, and liberals don't see it, keep hugging trees and eating chinese while they take our country and shape it to what foreigners like.

  8. WOW - is all I can say!

Since I grew up there, I guess I can say you people have NO IDEA what is going on in a small town 2000 miles away... but you keep that racist impulse!!!

  9. victorb - that is some pretty ignorant talk and obviously you have no idea about American history or any concept of sociology. Why do you think every major American city has a Chinatown or Little Italy. Italian-Americans are probably the most close knit group in America. What do you think has happened since America opened it's doors? This isn't new. People gravitate to others that are similar to them. While 1st generation Americans may choose to remain close to other people from their home countries (I will admit they also show racism), it is their children that will be integrated. They will fight hard against it, but their children will interact and develop relationships with people that are not like them.

Someone complained of harrassment in Michigan and it was turned into communities being ruled by Islamic Law. That sir, is hate-mongering and racism.

  10. I think Obama and the democrats in general should be scared as hell that the public is so fed up with them, that this nutjob is running neck and neck with the senate majority leader and long time incumbent.
Unfortunately, I do not think there is ANY message being received and I do not think there is ANY self reflection by Obama on why people are so fed up with his administration to even consider voting in someone as screwed up as angle

  11. It's funny how the comments made by Obama's Pastor Wright did not/does not seem to bother the democrats. So why should this?

  12. Not since George W Bush's reelection campaign have I seen a candidate so bent on using fear and bigotry in a desperate bid to get elected.

This woman has no shame, and apparently has no Muslim friends, neighbors or even acquaintances.

I guess all that talk about Sharron's bunker was right.

  13. Has to make you wonder where Sharron Angle gets her information. You would think her handlers would stop her before she says some of these things.

Not defending anyone at this point but it is easy to understand why some people always win their elections, look who the other parties try to get elected. ;(

  14. Dang, Airweare, I was just this morning wondering where you were...

Yes, our Wicked Witch is AWFULLY BUSY flying around on her broom, identifying pockets of the country in dire need of some of her "JUICE"...

"Whaddya got down there, Moozlims? Poor People? VET'S? Those lazy unemployed freeloaders? Well, stand back, I'll be sprayin' my Venum Juice on em!!!"

  15. President Obama has given millions of tax payer dollars to muslim organizations. I thought there was separation of church and state.

President Obama supports building a Muslim shrine on top of ground zero.

President Obama has Nasa's mission being to Muslim-ize the world.

If you believe in separation of church and state, then President Obama should stop giving our tax payer money to Muslims.

Nothing wrong with Muslims - but they should follow the same church and state separation. I think most would agree on this.

  16. Two inadequate candidates in Nevada.....

however, we know Reid loves to take our money, devalue our homes, give our jobs to illegal aliens; force American citizens to be unemployed; call heart pace makers luxury items; will take all your wealth when you die (if you have any) and not allow you to give it to your children. Reid will put moms and dads in jail if they do not pay the amazing increase on health insurance; he slashed Medicaid. He plans to give college educations to illegal aliens, while raising the cost of college for those born here.

The difference is that the writers of the newspaper do not write it so plainly. Reid has done all of this...

So if you hate both - then VOTE FOR NO ONE.

We cannot allow ourselves to tell Reid he has done a good job when he has brought such horrible harm on the Nevada family.

Dump the Senile Reid - and each day he ages, the more harm he causes.

  17. @lovestohike...

"President Obama has Nasa's mission being to Muslim-ize the world."

    Yeah, baby!
Right after the secret "MARS" project...
    little green men...infiltrating high-ranking Government positions...zapping our computers' hard-drive's blank...mass brain-washing kool-aid parties...wait, that already happened...

  18. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Dearborn, Michigan, it is the home of Henry Ford. The city's population of about 100,000 includes 30,000 Arab Americans. Dearborn has the largest proportion of Arab Americans for a city of its size in America. The first Arabs who immigrated here in the early to mid-1900s to work in the automotive industry were chiefly Lebanese Christians (Syriac-Maronites). Since then, Arab immigrants from Yemen, Iraq, and the Palestinian territories, most of whom are Muslim, have joined them. Lebanese Americans are still the most numerous group. The city is the location of the Islamic Center of America, the largest mosque in North America, and the Dearborn Mosque.

Dearborn is, like any other American city of its size, a community of families who simply want to raise their children in peace. No part of Dearborn is subject to Sharia, or any other religious-based law. That a few hate-filled, fear-mongering weasels nearly two thousand miles away would insist such a thing tells you absolutely nothing about Dearborn, or Michigan, or Islam. However, it tells you absolutely everything you need to know about Sharron Angle and her supporters.

  19. This is another one of Angle's outrageous lies. Only the stupid and gullible will believe what she says when they can see with their own eyes that there is zero evidence of any American city being overtaken by sharia law.

lovestohike--It's obvious that you weren't paying attention to what GWB did during his two terms in office. He also sent Imam Rauf on goodwill missions to Muslim countries and you didn't open your mouth.

GWB also said that all Muslims weren't our enemies, and you said nothing.

President Obama defended our Constitution when he spoke about the Establishment Clause in the First Amendment. Psst! It was in his Oath of Office.

Obviously, you know very little about Muslim contributions to the world that you probably benefit from today. One of them was in the promotion of the idea that hygiene in medical facilities is very important. You do know that the LV Sun has been running a series on how some patients in NV hospitals have contracted some very, very nasty "bugs" that have changed their lives forever I hope. I'll leave you to your ignorance about NASA and Muslim scholars, but I will tell you that the majority of Muslims are young and much better educated than our young people are.

Another little piece of information you don't know is that there are synagogues and churches in, gasp! Iran, and the government allows their members to practice their religion freely. The only prohibition on them is that they don't proselytize.

The depth of many Americans' stupidity of foreign nations and other religions outside of Christianity is appalling.

    Google is your friend.

I know this information because I used to teach it before I retired, and I made it my business to pay attention, read and study when I was in college and graduate school. Education is also your friend. I'd hate to see you among a group of highly educated international individuals spouting off at the mouth about things you don't know. You'd provide the evening's free entertainment.

  20. "Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."

    -- Hermann Goering

  21. From Gail Collins, NYT 10/9:

Angle did make an appearance last week at a rally of Tea Party supporters in Mesquite, where she responded to a question about "Muslims wanting to take over the United States" by decrying the fact that Dearborn, Mich., and Frankford, Tex., were governed under Islamic law, called Sharia. Which, of course, they are not.

The Associated Press, which reported on this event, noted that while Dearborn does at least have "a thriving Muslim community," it was not clear why Angle picked on Frankford, Tex., which did not seem to have many Muslims, and also went out of existence around 1975.
Does Angle EVER say anything sane? Just think, come January our representatives in the Senate will be an empty headed pretty boy with legal and ethical problems and maybe an insane woman. Can hardly wait.
