Shamel David rushed for more than 200 yards and two touchdowns Thursday in leading the Rancho football team past Valley, 39-29.

The win gives Rancho the No. 4 seed from the Northeast Division for the Sunrise Regional playoffs. They play at regional favorite Liberty next week in the quarterfinals.

“I figured (at the beginning of the year) that Liberty was one of the best, if not the best, team in the region,” Rancho coach Elvin Dick said. “But you still have to play the game. We aren’t going to throw in the white towel, but we know we are going to have to be perfect in all three aspects of the game.”

The Rams lost league games this year to the three teams ahead of them in the standings — Las Vegas, Canyon Springs and Desert Pines.

But they edged Eldorado and Valley in the last two weeks to reach the playoffs.

“They were more physical than us,” Dick said of the defeats. “We are kind of young and that had a lot to do with it, too. We matched up better physically with Eldorado and Valley.”
