CD review: TV on the Radio

Nine Types of Light

TV on the Radio’s Nine Types of Light

The members of TV on the Radio don’t need a Grammy to know they’ve been rock’s most consistently interesting indie brigade over the past decade. The rest of us get a reminder every few years, in the form of an EP or album that makes listening to much anything else a chore. Nine Types of Light comfortably carries on the tradition.

The Details

TV on the Radio
Four stars

Full-length No. 4 departs from the post-apocalyptic commotion of 2006’s Return to Cookie Mountain and 2008’s Dear Science for stuff that might sound traditional were it not steeped in David Sitek’s fantastically futuristic production and topped with Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone’s anxiously ominous vocals. Highlights range from horn-flecked soul shimmy “Second Song” to haunting electro ballad “Will Do” to the punky, funky “Caffeinated Consciousness.”

Great stuff as usual, and you don’t have to trek all the way out to the suburbs to find it.
