2 Nevada high school students die in diving accident

Authorities say two Carson High School students have died in a diving accident in off Monterey, Calif.

Monterey police spokesman Lt. Jeff Jackson tells the Nevada Appeal of Carson City that the two 17-year-old boys died Saturday while on a dive excursion with several others in Monterey Bay.

Reno's KTVN-TV reports that fire officials say 19 divers went down but only 17 surfaced. Rescuers searched the waters for about 45 minutes before finding the bodies.

No details on how the deaths occurred were immediately available.

The boys' names weren't released. They were sophomores and in the school's oceanography class.

Carson City Schools Superintendent Richard Stokes says the event was sponsored by a Reno-based Scuba company.
