Nevada Wonk

Carolyn Goodman incorrectly cites Teach for America as pathway to citizenship

First Carolyn Goodman called the DREAM Act "embryonic" and said she needed more information before taking a position on it.

Then in trying to set the record straight about the federal proposal, Goodman made another blunder.

In an interview with Spanish-language Univision, Goodman said young undocumented residents could earn citizenship by working for Teach for America, a two-year program that hires recent college graduates to teach in urban and rural public schools.

"We have programs like Teach (for) America...where these young people can begin their pathway for citizenship," Goodman said.

That's incorrect.

Service with Teach for America would not fulfill the requirements of the DREAM Act.

In order to begin on the road to citizenship, undocumented young people who were brought to this country as children would have to complete two years of college or serve two years in the U.S. Military.

Teach for America also notes on its website that volunteers must be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents.

A call to the Goodman campaign was not immediately returned.
