LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Education cuts are best-case scenario

Does the public see the big picture? Does our governor or do the members of the state Assembly and Senate? The cuts to education that are currently being discussed are a best-case scenario. The budget the new superintendent has proposed includes increased class sizes for all grade levels and a reduction of about 1,600 teaching positions.

What is not being discussed is the fact that none of the big three (teachers, administrators and support staff) has agreed to any wage or benefit concessions. I agree that concessions need to be made but I can’t see them being as severe as what are being discussed. I am sure there are many Clark County School District employees who won’t agree to any concessions. What then?

Imagine a high school with no Advanced Placement programs, no band, no theater, no orchestra, no library (the librarian was let go), no support for Engligh-language learning or special education and class sizes approaching 50 or more. The worst-case scenario is not even being discussed. Wake up, Nevada!

The writer is a public school teacher.
