Firefighters were still investigating Saturday morning the cause of an overnight fire that completely gutted one of the units in a one-story tri-plex apartment building in Las Vegas.

No one was hurt in the fire, which was first called in at 4:44 a.m. to 911 dispatchers, according to Timothy R. Szymanski, public education/information officer.

Damage to the wood-frame/stucco building, which was built in 1953, was estimated at $40,000.

Szymanski said in his report that firefighters arrived at 4:51 a.m. to the Vegas Heights Apartments at 827 Hassell Ave., which is near the intersection of H Street and West Lake Mead Drive.

They found that one of the three apartments in the fire was fully involved in flames, Szymanski said.

Firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the blaze and prevent it from spreading to the two other units, he said.

"Neighbors say a man and a woman stay in the apartment and they were seen leaving the unit just prior to the fire," Szymanski said.

Firefighters say they didn't return to the scene during the incident and it is unknown who they are or where they went, he said.
