Metro Police are investigating a Saturday afternoon shooting involving an off-duty Clark County School District Police officer.

The officer was in the parking lot of the El Pollo Loco restaurant near the intersection of Eastern and Sahara avenues when he witnessed an altercation between two individuals across the street, Metro Lt. Dan Zehnder said.

One of the individuals pulled out a gun and fired shots at the other individual before running across the street to the parking lot where the off-duty officer was watching, Zehnder said.

The officer confronted the individual and shots were fired, probably both by the suspect and by the officer, although police are still trying to determine who shot first, Zehnder said.

The suspect then got into a car and drove off, police said. The car later dropped off two people with non-life threatening wounds at Sunrise Hospital, where they were taken into custody by police, Zehnder said.

Police don’t yet know if those injured were shot by the officer. The matter is still under investigation.

The off-duty officer was not injured, Zehnder said.

Metro Police is investigating the shooting with the cooperation of School District Police, officials said.
