LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

‘Bare below the elbow’ a win-win policy

Maureen Dowd’s Thursday column, “Sometimes we need to give doctors orders,” was a powerful addition to the Las Vegas Sun’s award-winning series about hospital care. In her well-documented commentary about hospital-acquired infections, she shared a practice with no fiscal impact that could be put in place immediately.

She reported that, four years ago, the British National Health Service initiated a “bare below the elbow” dress code that bars ties, lab coats, jewelry on hands and wrists and long fingernails.

This simple policy is a wonderful supplement to ongoing hand-washing practices — and it wouldn’t cost a penny.
