CSN to host Hinman Elementary students for family event

The College of Southern Nevada will host the Hinman Elementary School Family Night Out on Friday.

The college is inviting students and their families from the Henderson elementary school to attend a free Coyotes baseball game at Morse Stadium on CSN’s Henderson campus, 700 College Drive.

The free event is part of Communities in Schools of Nevada, a drop out prevention program launched with the help of chairwoman Elaine Wynn. Since its inception in Nevada in 2003, the organization has helped to keep more than 25,000 youth in school, according to the group.

Through the Communities in Schools, volunteers from CSN’s Henderson campus have coordinated baseball and softball clinics, participated in reading week and judged science fairs at Hinman Elementary. Friday’s event will be a chance for families to bring their children to campus and introduce them to college life.

“We know how challenging it can be to find inexpensive family activities,” CSN’s Communities in Schools partnership chairwoman Linda Gannon said in a statement. “Our goal with Family Night Out is to provide a place for families to get together and have fun.

“At the same time, we are getting students on campus to give them a glimpse of college life,” Gannon continued. “We want to spark the interest of both the students and parents in higher education.”

The CSN game will take place at 4 p.m. against Colorado Northwestern Community College. The Family Night Out event will include food and raffle prizes.
