Teachers union gives Nevada Legislature bad grades

Nevada's statewide teachers union is giving members of the state Legislature failing grades for deep budget cuts and changes to teacher evaluation and collective bargaining rules.

Nevada State Education Association ranked members of the state Senate and Assembly on a scale of A to F for its regular Legislative Report Card released Monday.

Every elected Republican flunked.

The only Democrat to get an "F" was state Sen. John Lee of North Las Vegas.

The report card gives low marks to Democrats who sponsored an education reform package making it easier to fire underperforming teachers.

Assembly Speaker John Oceguera of Las Vegas and Assemblywoman Debbie Smith of Sparks both got Ds.

Nevada's hard-fought schools budget ended with pay cuts for teachers and calls them to contribute to their pensions.
