A central valley elementary school will celebrate its Blue Ribbon School status on Thursday, as well as its 35th anniversary.

Helen Marie Smith Elementary School was one of only 304 schools in the nation to become a Blue Ribbon School last year. The elementary school, located at 7101 Pinedale Ave., is named after a longtime Las Vegas educator who served as the principal of the Helen J. Stewart School and Halle Hewetson Elementary School.

Students, parents and residents are invited to celebrate the school’s national recognition and its anniversary at 6 p.m. Thursday with presentations, refreshments and an open house tour of the school, which will match current and former teachers with their classrooms.

Former Clark County School District Board of Schools Trustees President Terri Janison and a representative from the U.S. Department of Education are scheduled to attend, along with five former school principals.

Principal John Haynal will also welcome several original teachers at the school, which opened in 1975.

“This is going to be an awesome evening,” Haynal said in a statement. “To have so many of the people who have contributed to the success of our school return and be part of this celebration is truly special. It will be a night to remember.”
