Fighting against a “brand,” Chris Giunchigliani is taking her years of service into the last day of the campaign today against Carolyn Goodman, wife of Oscar Goodman, for the seat of Las Vegas mayor.

Just after voting at 7:30 a.m. today, “Chris G,” as she is called by friends due to the difficulty some have with pronouncing her multi-syllabic last name, said she has relentlessly campaigned and several people who weren’t going to vote made commitments that they would vote for her.

“It’s been a fun campaign,” she said before driving to the Clark County Government Center, where she attended her regularly scheduled meeting of the Clark County Commission.

Giunchigliani, who served 16 years as a state assemblywoman and is in her second term as a commissioner, has never lost an election. She has done well in debates against Goodman, displaying her knowledge of governmental operations, but faces an uphill battle because of Goodman’s last name.

Oscar Goodman has been one of the most popular mayors in Las Vegas history, winning more than 80 percent of the vote in his last election. He is term-limited out of office. His wife’s campaign platform has generally been that she would run to keep doing what her husband did.

After the commission meeting, Giunchigliani said she will head to her campaign headquarters on West Charleston Boulevard to make phone calls to encourage people to vote.
