LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

School vouchers are not just a tool for the wealthy

Much has been said about Gov. Brian Sandoval’s proposal for school vouchers. Susan J. Ward, in her Friday letter to the editor, headlined “Vouchers are a terrible idea for our public schools,” concludes that passage of this proposal is tantamount to class warfare. Allow me to put another spin on it.

I am in a two-income family making less than $100,000 per year. Yet, we have two children in private school. Simple math shows that we spend more than 20 percent of our income on private education.

We don’t have new cars. We don’t live in a big new house and we are not underwater. We don’t go out to dinner. Our main goal is to provide the best possible education for our children.

Unfortunately, Nevada does not want to provide the education that we deem appropriate for our children’s future success. So, we make the choice to forgo the things that many others enjoy on a regular basis. Yes, this is our choice.

Would we appreciate the vouchers? Of course. Are we part of the wealthy upper class? We definitely are not.

Voucher systems can be set up to assist people of all economic classes. If we can set up sliding scales for various other services, why not do the same for school vouchers? That way the wealthy are still paying their way and others have the opportunity to make a choice.
