A shopping center east of downtown Las Vegas that was destroyed by fire four years ago endured a second blaze Sunday night. The fire, ruled accidental early this morning, caused $100,000 worth of damage, officials said.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue spokesman Tim Szymanski said firefighters arrived at 10:17 p.m. to the Stewart Square Shopping Center at 235 N. Eastern Ave., near Stewart Avenue, after callers to 911 reported seeing smoke.

Firefighters saw smoke coming from the shopping center's roof and discovered fire inside the Discount Food Mart, Szymanski said.

Crews extinguished the blaze in the rear of the store, which had closed about 15 minutes earlier, Szymanski said. The damage was confined to Discount Food Mart and no one was injured, he said.

Investigators ruled the blaze accidental, caused by paper goods that caught fire from being too close to a hot plate used for heating water, officials said.

A three-alarm fire in January 2007 destroyed seven stores and caused $1.2 million worth of damage to the same shopping center. That fire also was ruled accident, the result of workers improperly using a torch on the roof, officials said.
