As election day nears, the candidates for Las Vegas mayor are refining their messages to try to set themselves apart from the pack of 18.

Early voting begins March 19. Primary day is April 5. Only the candidates who receive the two highest vote tallies will move forward to the general election.

Businessman and former Republican official George Harris released his second television ad today in which he emphasizes his small business roots and ability to balance a budget.

"As a restaurant owner, I know how tough this economy has been," Harris says as images of his restaurant flash on the screen. "But each week, we've had to meet payroll and live within our means, something our politicians have forgotten how to do."

Harris has tried to set himself apart from the leading candidates by describing himself as a businessman, not a politician. His first commercial took a similar tone.

Clark County Commissioner Larry Brown also is trying to distinguish himself, by coming down strong on firefighter sick leave abuses.

He released a new mailer this week dedicated to the issue.

"I want to make my position clear to the citizens of Las Vegas," Brown wrote. "If it’s one firefighter or one hundred, past or present, those employees that cheat the system should be terminated and prosecuted to the full extent of the law."
