The Las Vegas Planning Commission granted a variance Tuesday night to allow the Neon Museum to build a 10-foot-high wall around the Neon Boneyard Park to combat vandalism.

The Neon Museum, which houses neon signs from Las Vegas' past, is rehabilitating the lobby of the historic La Concha Motel so it can expand its public hours and include a visitors center. Construction on the project began in February 2010.

The museum construction site, 770 N. Las Vegas Blvd., is surrounded by an 8-foot-high temporary fence that city officials say has been ineffective against trespassing and vandalism. The variance would allow the museum to build an 8-foot-tall wall with a 25-inch wrought iron fence on top.

“It’s a good solution to the problem,” said Sam Tolman, the architectural project manager. “We’ve had a lot of vandalism with people jumping the walls for various reasons."

The barrier would be built around the museum portion of the development, 810 N. Las Vegas Blvd., which is already surrounded by 8- to 14-foot-high walls.

The nonprofit museum is open to the public by appointment only.

The planning commission also approved final design plans for a new five-story parking garage in downtown Las Vegas.

The 730-space parking garage, 500 S. Main St., will serve the new City Hall and Symphony Park. The project will also contain 4,096 square feet of general retail space on the ground floor.

Original plans for the construction site called for a five-story, 675-space parking garage with ground floor retail space. The finalized plan contains more parking spaces and is taller than the original plan, although it contains less retail space.
