The Bar

A Metro Police officer who shot a man to death while conducting a routine check at a northeast valley tavern Tuesday night has been identified as Sgt. David M. Toney.

Toney, 44, has been with Metro since January 1999 and is assigned to the Patrol Division of the Northeast Area Command.

The shooting happened about 8:50 p.m. at The Bar, 1987 N. Nellis Blvd., police said. When Toney walked into the bar, a man identified as Mauricio Hernandez, 23, of Las Vegas, pulled out a gun and pointed it at the officer, police said.

Toney drew his weapon and fired at least one round, Metro Capt. Patrick Neville said. It was not clear whether Hernandez fired his weapon, police said.

Hernandez died at the scene.

Toney was placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the investigation.
