A woman was found dead Sunday evening as firefighters battled a house fire in the northeast Las Vegas Valley.

Clark County spokesman Dan Kulin said firefighters responded about 5:20 p.m. to reports of a fire at the two-story home at 1795 Mt. Hood St. That location is near Mt. Hood's intersection with East Lake Mead Boulevard.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the rear of the home, Kulin said. The fire was extinguished in about 20 minutes.

A woman was found dead inside the home. Her name and an official cause of death will be released by the Clark County Coroner's Office.

The victim, who lived at the home with her step-daughter and the step-daughter's two children, was alone at the time of the fire.

Damage to the house was estimated at $50,000 and the cause of the fire is under investigation. A cat was killed in the fire, but firefighters rescued two dogs.
