Official: Wealthy seniors using program for reduced-fare taxi rides

CARSON CITY – A lot of wealthy senior citizens are taking advantage of a reduced taxicab ride in Clark County, and that might be coming to an end.

“A lot of Mercedes are pulling up to the office and seeking the coupons,” said Carol Sala, administrator of the state Division of Aging and Disability Services.

A person over 60 years old or disabled in the Las Vegas area can pay $10 to get a coupon book for $20 in taxicab rides. There are no income restrictions.

Sala told a Senate-Assembly joint budget subcommittee Wednesday that she is getting ready to impose guidelines for the books to let only low-income seniors be eligible.

The senior ride program is available only in Clark County and is funded through a surcharge placed on every taxicab ride. The program is administered by the state.

She said, for example, Sun City residents are buying the coupon books and using them to “go to the airport.”

A senior can now purchase four books a month for the reduced rate. In the first quarter of this fiscal year, the division sold 10,447 coupon books.
