LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Isn’t an education more important than their toys?

People are saying they don’t want new taxes to pay for education. I wonder who “they” are?

• The people who are paying $100-plus a ticket to see Celine Dion?

• The people who are standing in line to buy a $600 iPad or new video game console?

• The people who are sitting at slot machines in casinos half the day? (They’re not all tourists.)

• The people carrying designer handbags and wearing designer clothing?

• The people who are paying $100-a-month cell phone bills just so they can check Facebook and text everyone they know at restaurants and while driving?

It’s funny how people are willing to spend money on things they want, but not a penny to save the children of this state. I have not seen Celine, don’t have an iPad, spend very little time in casinos, don’t wear designer clothing or have a phone that is used for anything except — gasp! — phone calls.

I don’t need these things to be happy. Yet I am willing to pay a little more in taxes to keep our schools healthy. After all, without education, there won’t be any new toys for “them” to play with, because there will be no educated people left who know how to create these things.
