A 35-year-old man died at a hospital Friday after a fire damaged a building behind a house in the eastern Las Vegas Valley.

Firefighters responded at 3:04 p.m. to the fire at 4990 Pearlite Ave., which is southwest of the intersection of Tropicana Avenue and Mountain Vista Street. Ken Morgan, deputy chief for the Clark County Fire Department, said the fire was in an "outbuilding" -- possibly a garage converted to an apartment -- behind the home.

Flames and smoke were coming from the building as firefighters arrived. Morgan said the man inside was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in critical condition, but later died as a result of his injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No one else was in the building or the home, Morgan said.

Clark County spokesman Dan Kulin said damage to the building is estimated at $20,000.
